Discussion: Recy Taylor, Rosa Parks and Resistance

I joined “Left of Black” hosted by Mark Anthony Neal at Duke University for a fantastic discussion about the role of women, gender and sexual violence in the civil rights movement. We talked about my book, At the Dark End of the Street; about the gendered roots of the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott; sexual violence as a catalyst for the civil rights movement; and warriors for human dignity and bodily integrity like Recy Taylor, Gertrude Perkins, Betty Jean Owens, and Joan Little.
